The Gater as we know it descended from a long line of great music and air talent that worked on stations like "Wizard 99, WIZD" in the 1970s and early 80s and with a call letter change to WKGR as "Gourmet Rock" and later "Kick Ass Rock" through the early 90s.
Love Doctors Glenn and Rich were broadcasting on 98.7 FM in the late 80s.
The station was sold in 1990 and after much discussion was named "The Gater" spelled with an `E' specifically to avoid upsetting any 'Canes or 'Noles football fans. On January 15th 1991 at midnight DJ Peter Moon debuted "The Gater 98.7FM" to the Palm Beaches and Treasure Coast playing Rod Stewart's "Hot Legs." The morning show back then featured veteran talent Buck McWilliams (yes, he's back on The Gater's midday show today!) We were licensed to the City of Ft. Pierce with a 100,000 Watt signal that many called the best in Florida at the time. Clear and clean from south of Commercial Blvd. in Ft. Lauderdale to Cocoa Beach and almost all the way across the state to Ft. Myers. The Gater broadcast from a converted funeral home just south of Orange Avenue in Ft. Pierce. A few weeks later I showed up as the midday guy on April 13th 1991. In August of 1991 "The Gater" moved it's studios and offices to West Palm Beach. We've changed to new studios three times since then, all in Palm Beach County where we are today. In a business move that had no effect to listeners WKGR changed it's city of license to Wellington in 2010.

11/12/13 Magic numbers for a magic night of music. Firefall has had close to a dozen huge hits and they'll play 'em all Tuesday night. The leader of the band Jock Bartley and I had a chance to chat as he was on his way to Tampa Stadium for the Bucs-'Fins game. See you at the show! (photo courtesy of Firefall)
Here comes the Big Red Truck!
It will be so nice to have the Marshall Tucker Band back again at the Jensen Beach Pineapple Festival. Join the Gater as they take the stage at 6pm on Saturday night for some serious Southern Rock inspiration. All our favorites "24 Hours At A Time" "Heard It In A Love Song" "Can't You See" "Ramblin" "Fire On The Mountain." We'll have so much fun! Stick around for the Little River Band at 9pm. See you there....
This Friday 11/8/13 beginning at 12 noon Grand Funk Railroad headlines the Golden Veteran's Parade with a FREE concert. Honoring vets from the Bay Of Pigs and Vietnam, when the guys play Closer To Home there won't be a dry eye in the house. See you there for Miami's salute to our Veterans at Bayfront Park 301 North Biscayne Blvd., in Miami.
I spoke to Grand Funk founding member Don Brewer about what this show means to the band, The American Band! Hope to see you there.
What a treat to hear the man and his wife tell us their stories at the Colony on Palm Beach last night. It had all the drama and fun of an Allman Brothers Band concert. Butch was particularly poignant speaking of Duane Allman, and of his wife Melinda an accomplished artist who had some great stories of her own. Butch brought along some nice memorabilia for us to appreciate. And bonus! He and the ABB are looking forward to Wanee #10 next April! Andy

Sammy Hagar will be at Hard Rock Live this Thursday night! I got to catch up with The Red Rocker on Friday afternoon to talk more about the show, his new album "Sammy Hagar and Friends," the annual birthday bash, and more!
The new album is out now, and features Kid Rock, Nancy Wilson (Heart), Ronnie Dunn (Brooks & Dunn), Neal Schon (Journey, HSAS), Chad Smith, (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Chickenfoot), Michael Anthony (Chickenfoot, Van Halen), Joe Satriani (Chickenfoot), Bill Church & Denny Carmassi (Montrose), The Wabos and more.
Since there are some Country Friends on the album that will be at the CMA's this week, I had to ask about the possibility of a Sammy appearance as well! Will he be there Wednesday night? Listen to the clip below to get his answer!
