It is with a heavy heart that South Florida bids farewell to a sports legend. Not one that played but one that reported. Talking about Pat Murphy leaving WPEC TV. His charity golf tournament raised millions for those great kids in Palm Beach County and the tournament always drew luminaries from the golfing world. Once when I was supposed to be the "celebrity" for the other 3 golfers in 1995, I came to the Palm Beach Polo Club that Sat morning only to find out my group had the high bid ($5,000) on Greg Norman to fill my place! I got to meet Greg as I was taking my bags out of the cart, and it made for a great story in the PB Post the next day!
Pat was unceremoniously dumped from one local station and in typical selfless fashion, agreed to wake up early each day the next week and come do the sports cast for free on the "Buck and Peg" morning show. On one particular day we also had in the studio a regular at the time, Dan Whitney, who used to come in daily for about 3 years to help out and write for the show. You probably know him as
Larry the Cable Guy now. With Dan and Pat in the same small studio, we had the show of our lives that day. And some day I will transfer it from cassette to cloud service so we can all enjoy it again.
Before all that chemo and radiation took years off my face, Pat and I used to look alike, and were often mistaken for each other. One time at Cafe Chardonnay a kid ran up to my table and said, "My parents have a bet...my Dad says you are Pat Murphy and my Mom says you are Buck McWilliams!" I quickly called management and had them all thrown out!
One of the last ones to serve, is leaving us and we can't thank him enough. Best of luck Pat!
