Without even playing this past weekend, the Miami Dolphins all of a sudden find themselves in second place in the AFC East division. The team is 3-3, and only one win away from matching the New England Patriots win-loss ratio of 4-3 after their near-miss against the New York Jets.
Miami has one fewer loss than the Jets and the Buffalo Bills, if only because those teams have not yet had their bye weeks. Still, good enough...I'll take it.
Here's the reality, however:
The Dolphins are 0-1 in the division. They still have to face the Buffalo Bills (twice), not sure I'm too concerned about that. Miami also still has to play New England (twice) and of course the Jets game in New Jersey this Sunday.
I'm not saying the Fins aren't talented enough to beat the Jets this time around. I mean the team took the Jets to overtime in Game 1. The talent on the field for the Jets has only receded since then.
The Bills? I wouldn't be surprise if the Fins sweep them this season. But the New England Patriots are still the team to fear in this division. No, Tom Brady is not playing like Tom Brady and the Pats' defense stinks.
However, I'm not giving up on New England's storied ability to play a full 60 minutes and come out with a win, even if it didn't seem likely during the game.
I guess what I'm saying is, it would be a great Cinderella story if the Dolphins wrapped up the season with a nice playoff spot at the top of the AFC East, but a lot of work needs to be done on that path.
I still love what I see in QB Ryan Tannehill and can't wait for the matchup later this season against #1 pick, quarterback Andrew Luck and his Indianapolis Colts. That's when we'll truly be able to watch both rookies play and decide which one is better.
But, let's come down to earth a bit. Miami is a team that wasn't expected to win many games with Tannehill at the helm and has already surprised many of the so-called "experts".
Let's enjoy that for now, and hope for a big win come Sunday against those stinky Jets!
